Adrian

This was definitely a mistake. I don't know what possessed me when I asked Drew to my house for dinner. She just looked so- I don't know perfect, yet not perfect at all sitting there. A feeling just filled me, and I couldn't resist. She doesn't even realize "I" was Adrian. This would probably blow up in my face completely.

Sucking in a steadying breath, I swung open my door and climbed out, turning towards where Drew parked across the street. She had insisted on driving her car instead of leaving it at the park. I guess the logical part of my brain understood, and if it all did go south, she would have an easy escape. She had a tentative smile as she looked past me at my house.

It was a four-bedroom Victorian home with a wrap-around porch. I looked back at my house and took it in with new eyes. The porch wrapped around to the right side, and a door that leads directly into the kitchen was at the back, behind a hanging bench swing and a small table and chair set. You could see the den area that popped out into a half-circle to the left side. The light was shining out from each window that ran the length of our front door. The entryway has a grand staircase, the kind you see in movies.

At the front of the house, the second floor had my sister's room and my parents. The light was peeking out of my sister's lacy curtains and blinds. I could see her shadow dancing around behind it. The third floor, which had been the old maids' quarters when the house had maids was dark. It held my mom's office, where she would go to write. The front porch light flickered to life as I took it all in. I wondered what she saw when she looked at it.

Looking back at Drew, I watched as she closed her car door and stepped towards me. "So, this is where the great Jackson lives. Impressive." She smiled as she approached.

Running my hand along the back of my neck, I decided at that moment to just come clean. She should hear it from me. Forget the rules of the stupid pen pal thing. They can't think that we wouldn't tell each other who we were or that we wouldn't already know each other. We had been tormenting each other for years. And in this circumstance, they wouldn't expect me not to say anything. Right?

I met her halfway and stopped in front of her, slightly blocking the path up to my house. "Drew, before we go inside, there is something I need to tell you."

She attempted to smile again as she shoved her hands into her pockets. "That bad, huh? I'm sure your family is not anything I can't handle. I don't have a stellar home life. I'm sure you remember."

My heart beat loudly in my ears as I worked up the courage to send the words out into the world.
